A culinary torch is a great tool to add to your kitchen. You might think that you can only use it for Crème Brûlée, but there are many other uses that you could use it for when making food. Using a torch to melt cheese is easier than using the broiler in your oven. All you do is use the torch and you are done. A broiler can be unpredictable at times and you must keep checking on your dish. Anything that you wish to burn a little bit on the top is what a torch can be used for. Burning the marshmallows on S’mores, browning the cheese on potatoes Au Gratin, browning the cheese on French onion soup, browning a meringue, roasting your peppers, or browning the top of macaroni and cheese can add a wonderful flavor and help your presentation to pop just a little bit more.
If you ever need to light a pilot, light a grill, flambé a drink or a dessert, or light a candle, your torch will serve you well. Get creative to see what else you can torch when you are making food. If you are hosting a dinner, people will delight in your culinary flare. (I even won a radio contest with my torch!)
The only problem that I had with using the torch is finding Butane for it. Amazon does not ship Butane to California and I looked for it in a few different places such as gas stations, convenience stores, and pharmacies. Could. Not. Find. It. Anywhere. My husband suggested I go to the local head shop to look for the gas. I had not ever been in a head shop before. I looked around until someone asked me if they could help me. To answer his question, I begin to tell him that I was using the torch for about 200 mini Crème Brûlées for a charity that I was helping with. He just looked at me like sure you are. They sold the torches to go along with the butane which became clear to me that went with the pipes that they were selling there for extracurricular activities. No wonder he did not believe me! Crème Brûlée was probably not the thing he was used to hearing as a cover story. The moral of the story is that you may need to get creative to find the gas for your torch and they may not think that you will be using it for the purpose of cooking FOOD!
